Blu-Ray Review: The Cat Returns (2002)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Monday, June 30, 2014 0 comments

"The Cat Returns" is an animated drama film about a teen-aged girl named Haru. One day while she is walking home from school she spots a cat running around.  Haru thinks nothing of the cat at first until she spots the cat crossing the road and then she saves the cat after he is nearly ran over by a truck. Shortly after that heroic moment she witnesses something she never expected to see in a million years and that was that the cat spoke to her and gave her his thanks and that she'll be rewarded. Later that night she is surprised as she spots a whole group of cats walking on their back legs carrying lanterns and carrying a big grey cat named The King of the Cats (but we'll just call him King Cat). King Cat gives Haru his thanks as the cat she saved ended up being his son and for her bravery King Cat is going to give her some gifts. The next day Haru wakes up only to think that her encounter with King Cat was all a dream but while at school she starts to receive a lot of unusual gifts and remembers that it wasn't a dream after all. Later that day she is visited by King Cat's number one servant who then tells her about what the King's biggest gift of all is... To be married to the Cat Prince and be part of the Royal Cat Family.  Haru doesn't like that at all and she goes to find help to get herself out of her engagement. Will she succeed? Or will this be the end of her nine lives? (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: Case Closed Season One (1996)

Posted by Retrokaiser On 0 comments

"Case Closed Season One" is an animated Comedy Drama Crime show about a guy in his late-teens named "Jimmy Kudo". Jimmy also happens to be a great athlete and detective and he has been hired by the police on many occasions to help them solve some tough crimes (mainly murder). One day he is invited to go to an amusement park with his childhood friend (and his crush) named "Rachel Moore" and he accepts as he believes that to be the best place to confess his love to her. While at the amusement park Jimmy and Rachel decide to go on the haunted house ride and get into a conversation with some people while waiting in line. While on the ride Jimmy notices something weird and when the ride ends we see that one of the people on the ride got their head sliced off (ouch). Jimmy gathers all the people who were on the ride so he can solve the case. Jimmy ends up solving the mystery and gets ready to head home but he notices some very suspicious looking people and he then starts to follow them. Jimmy witnesses a deal going on but the suspicious people spot him and then begin to poison Jimmy but instead of the poison killing him it instead turns him into a child. Now Jimmy is going under the name "Conan Edogawa" and is under the care of Rachel and her father "Richard Moore" and helps them out by solving crimes while he is trying to figure out how to turn himself back into his old self. Daaan da dun dun! Daaan da dun dun duuunnnnn!* (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: Cardcaptor Sakura - The Movie (1999)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Friday, June 27, 2014 0 comments

"Cardcaptors: The Movie" (AKA "Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie) is an animated supernatural drama film based on the television series "Cardcaptors" (AKA Cardcaptor Sakura). The film starts off with Sakura (a girl who is in charge of capturing magical cards that she accidentally let loose) is up late at night trying to capture a card that is causing damage around town.  After that battle she goes to bed and the next day she turns up to school in a very drowsy state from not getting enough sleep and talks to her friends about how she is going to spend her school holidays. Sakura is also having some strange dreams of water and a strange woman every time she closes her eyes. After school she goes to the shops to buy a bag with her friend named "Madison" only to be told that she is eligible to draw a ball from a box to win a prize. Sakura ends up pulling out a golden ball and ends up winning the grand prize that ends up being a free trip for four to Hong Kong. Sakura decides to take Tori (her brother), Julian (her brother's best friend and also Sakura's crush), and Madison. Sakura makes it to Hong Kong safely and runs into two more of her friends, Li and Meilin and has a great time with them. Her strange dreams have also started to become stronger to where a great evil magic can be felt. Is there some connection between Sakura's dreams and Hong Kong? DVD Review: Transformers Animated Season Two (2008)

Posted by Retrokaiser On 0 comments

"Transformers Animated Season Two" is an animated action show and a modern day adaptation of "The Transformers".  Picking up right where season one left off (there are going to be spoilers here so if you haven't seen season one then don't read) where the Autobots fought very hard to stop the Decepticons from destroying the whole city of Detroit.  Sadly the All-Spark (a device that gives great power to machinery) has been smashed into little pieces that are scattered all over Detroit.  To make things worse we have Optimus Prime's superior (Ultra Magnus) turn up on Earth and he isn't too happy that the All-Spark is smashed and puts Optimus Prime on trial for treason.  Lucky for Optimus he isn't charged but the Autobots have something more dangerous to worry about as the Decepticons have kidnapped Sari's father in hope for him to make them a space bridge that will take the Decepticons back to Cybertron so that they can take over both Earth and Cybertron.  Even worse news is that with the news of Sari's father gone we have a guy named Porter C. Powell who is eligible to overrun Sari and take over her father's company and he does just that leaving Sari having to live with the Autobots.  The citizens of Detroit are also really starting to dislike Transformers in general as they do a lot of damage and they don't want the Autobots around.  It's madness I tell you!  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: The Ren and Stimpy Show - The Complete Season One and Two (1991 - 1993)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Sunday, June 15, 2014 0 comments

"The Ren and Stimpy Show: Complete Season One and Two" is an animated comedy series about two room mates and their dysfunctional relationship. Ren Hoek (pronounced "Hoe-Ick" not "HOAK") is a little skinny Asthmatic Chihuahua and Stimpson "Stimpy" J. Cat is a big dumb lovable fat red house cat. Ren also has a bit of a short temper due to Stimpy annoying him with the dumb stuff he does and says and likes to smack some sense into him. Stimpy doesn't seem to mind as long as Ren is happy. When they aren't at home they are normally broke and homeless looking for shelter, going out trying to scam people for money and/or food, and some episodes consist of a mixture of all the above. Some adventures found in this collection includes: Ren and Stimpy trying to sell rubber nipples door to door, Ren and Stimpy teaming up for a tag-team wrestling match, Ren's cousin Sven coming over for a visit, Stimpy becoming famous and starring in kitty litter commercials, and Stimpy looking for his lost fart that he has grown attached to. It sounds nasty, it sounds gross, it sounds brilliant, and you can find out what I thought of it after the jump. (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

Blu-Ray Review: Dragonball Z Season One (1989 - 1990)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Saturday, June 14, 2014 0 comments

"Dragon Ball Z Season One" is the first out of nine volumes in a special re-release series that is specifically targeted for the blu-ray market. This show is a sci-fi action drama (or a sci-fi soap opera as I like to dub it) series about a warrior named Goku and his son named Gohan. One fine day we see Gohan playing around and getting lost in a forest only to have Goku pick him up and then takes him along to a special reunion at a place called "Kame House" where Goku's teacher named "Master Roshi" lives. While on the island Goku introduces Gohan to all his friends only to be interrupted by an invader from space named "Raditz". Raditz drops a major bomb-shell and tells Goku that he is his brother and that Goku is also from another planet. Raditz also beats up Goku and all the other fighters on the island and also kidnaps Gohan. Goku is very upset but from out of nowhere his arch-rival named "Piccolo" turns up and offers that they join up to take out a common enemy with that enemy being Raditz". Goku and Piccolo fly off and get into a battle and only manage just to barely beat Raditz. Once the battle with Raditz ends they find out that Earth has a bigger problem on it's hands as Raditz announces that two more warriors that are stronger than him will be landing on Earth in one year. Now our heroes must train if they must stand a chance of defeating the threat that is coming to Earth. Will our heroes succeed or die trying? (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

The Gaming Beast Streams #1 (Part 2)

Posted by theGamingBeast On Saturday, June 7, 2014 0 comments

The second part of my Stream. Playing more NES games.

"Patlabor - The Mobile Police: TV Series Collection One" is an animated science fiction comedy drama series about a police group named "Special Vehicles Division Two" (SV2 for short).  The SV2 are no ordinary police force as they use special mechs named "Labors" that are specifically designed to help make life easier.  Labors aren't just exclusive to the police force as they are also used to build stuff at construction sites, move heavy loads and stock for supermarkets, Firemen use them to help put out fires, you can say that they are just simply cranes or trucks but with legs and arms.  Sadly there are also a lot of idiots that like to break the law with them and that's where the SV2 come in to help put a stop to the law breakers.  Sadly there is a downside to all of this and what is this downside you ask yourself?  The SV2 team are full of clumsy knuckleheads that always seem to do more damage than the people that they are chasing down.  Some of the situations you will find our heroes in includes: Stopping black market Labor sellers, pulling over drunk Labor drivers, helping out in a village that is under constant Labor attacks, and there is even one episode where a mysterious creature is loose in a forest and the good old SV2 have to capture it before it causes some harm.  All this and more in this Gundam meets Police Academy sci-fi comedy drama series (damn I just made this show sound cheesy).  (Click "Read More" to read the full review").

VHS Review: Casshan - Robot Hunter Volume One (1993 - 1994)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Wednesday, June 4, 2014 0 comments

Before we kick off the review I would just like to mention that the following review was written somewhere between late-2012 to early-2013.  My review skills have grown a lot since then and I am surprised that they have grown in such little time.  What I am trying to say is that this came from a time where I was a bit rougher and not as expressive as I am today and my reviews weren't as long.  This review has been sitting on the shelf long enough and is time for it to finally come out.  So sit back and enjoy this rare review (not so rare now) being released for the first time ever... Well nearly for the first time ever as this review was released on April Fools Day 2014 but it was converted into binary as it also doubled up as a teaser to promote this review (great, I'm hyping it up too much now).

"Casshan: Robot Hunter - Volume One" contains the first two episodes of a four part OVA series. The show is about a female soldier named Luna living in a post-apocalyptic world taken over by a robot army ruled by The Black King. Luna and the rest of the human survivors are hoping that they will be saved from Black King's evil robot army by the legendary hero Casshan giving it a very Jesus Christ style of storytelling. I don't mind the story but there have been many shows like this that have done the whole "legendary hero returns" story a lot better than what this does.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

Blu-Ray Review: Adventure Time - The Complete Third Season (2011 - 2012)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Tuesday, June 3, 2014 0 comments

"Adventure Time: The Complete Third Season" is an animated adventure comedy series about two adventurers named: Jake the Dog (a magical Pug that has the ability to stretch) and Finn the Human (just a normal boy that loves to do good and have fun adventures). Together they travel across vast lands, explore dangerous dungeons, rescuing princesses from the evil (but not so tough) Ice King, saving normal folks from monsters, chilling out and playing games on BMO (their walking, talking video game console), and that's only a sample of what these heroes do. Some of the craziness you will see in these episodes are: Finn and Princess Bubblegum trying to get rid of a crazy lemon man, Finn and Jake trying to solve a murder mystery at a mansion, Finn and Jake going through Ice King's secret VHS tapes on Christmas Day, and we even get a very classic episode where we have an opposite world with characters named: Cake the Cat and Fiona the Human. So what time is it? (Time to click "Read More" so you can read the full review).

Some more nonsense of the Gaming Beast and Alex Swingle in the homeland of Hercules.

"The Amazing World of Gumball: The Amazing Volume Two" brings you six more amazing episodes and amazingly crams them onto one amazing DVD... Amazing! Cheap car salesman jokes aside The Amazing World of Gumball (or Gumball for short) is an animated series about the daily life of a little blue cat named Gumball Watterson. He just loves to play and get into trouble with his adopted brother that used to be their pet fish named Darwin. It is not as simple as that as they live in a cartoon world full of many different cartoon styles including: "Disney" looking characters, "Looney Tunes" styled characters, they even have 3D CGI and "Muppet" styled characters. Some of the amazing adventures found on this DVD includes: Darwin and Gumball invited to a crazy party, Darwin and Gumball getting lost in a dangerous forest while on their way to a picnic, Gumball starting up a race with the town's most dumbest people, Gumball going to a friend's funeral... a funeral for their pet that is, and Gumball and Darwin helping making their dad's wishes come true when he finds a magic wand. It truly is an amazing world. (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: Accel World Volume One (2012)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Sunday, June 1, 2014 0 comments

"Accel World Volume One" is an animated science fiction action show about a short fat kid named Haruyuki Arita who looks like a mixture between "Michal J. Fox" ("Back To The Future (1985)", "Frighteners (1996)") and "The Fat Controller" ("Thomas The Tank Engine (1984 - Ongoing)").  Arita isn't very popular and he is always getting picked on at school by a gang of delinquents. All of the constant bullying really gets to him and what he does to calm himself down is hook up to a virtual reality game and plays "Super Squash". I should mention that this show is set in the future where all the children have virtual projectors inserted into them at birth (creepy if you ask me). One day after being bullied he jumps into the virtual world only to find out that someone has beaten his score on "Super Squash" and this gets him even more depressed.

While moping he meets up with another player who goes under the name "Kuroyukihime" and she ends up inventing him to meet up with her in the lounge where older students hang out.  Arita takes her up on that offer and meets up with her and she makes him an offer that he can't refuse. She offers him a special software named "Brain Burst" that will give him the ability to tamper with speed. The only warning she gives him is that he should not connect to the Internet while he has that software. The next day Arita asks his mother for money but he has to be online for her to transfer funds into his bank and as soon as he knows it he finds out that this "special software" is actually a fighting game.  Arita gets dragged into a virtual world and now he has to fight to keep his powers (I wonder if "Brain burst" has "Steam Trading Cards"). (Click "Read More" to read the full review).
