Steam Game Review: The Next Penelope - Race to Odysseus (2015)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Thursday, February 26, 2015 0 comments

"The Next Penelope - Race to Odysseus" is a futuristic driving adventure game for the PC.  This game starts off with chaos as there is disorder between the people of Ithaca and Poseidon as Poseidon wants the ship, Odysseus.  Sadly Odysseus has been missing for such a long time and now it is up to Ithaca's beautiful (but beaten) leader, Penelope.  Penelope must now take off in her spaceship so that she can search the galaxy for the missing Odysseus and put a rest to this chaos.  Penelope has a very tough task ahead as it's not as simple as flying through space as she also has to explore planets that each have their own tasks whether it'd be racing, battling monsters, or even collecting as this isn't your typical driving game.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

Steam Game Review: Words for Evil (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Wednesday, February 25, 2015 0 comments

"Words for Evil" is an RPG-esk puzzle game that has you playing as a character of your choosing and going out on an adventure to find treasure and fight monsters over various levels.  Sounds simple enough but what if I told you that this game plays like no other adventure game you have ever played before?  The way you battle in this game is by fighting with words. How does that work you ask?  Well all will be answered after the jump.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

Steam Game Review: Rock Boshers DX: Director's Cut (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Tuesday, February 24, 2015 0 comments

"Rock Boshers DX: Director's Cut" is a neo-retro adventure game that is paying tribute to computer games from the cassette tape era namely the "ZX Spectrum (1982)".  In this game you play as a young princess named Victoria whom is living in a world where men in top hats and fancy trousers rule the streets (sounds like hell if you ask me).  There's a craze going on with the men in hats as they are all flying off into space in giant bullet shaped spaceships so they can get to Mars (the planet and not the tasty chocolate/caramel/nougat bar).  Princess Victoria is curious about Mars but sadly no ladies are allowed and so she disguises herself as a top hat fancy pants man and successfully catches a spaceship to Mars.  When she reaches Mars she finds out that it's not all that's cracked up to be as everyone who goes there becomes slaves to an evil man that wears a bigger hat and even fancier pants and so it is up to Victoria to save them all from this dastardly man.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

Steam Game Review: Unhack (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Monday, February 23, 2015 0 comments

"Unhack" is a hybrid game that mixes in elements from the puzzle and visual novel genres.  In this game you play as a character named Unhacker, his job is to fix up systems that have been hacked.  Unhacker isn't alone on his journey as he is joined by some beautiful A.I. (artificial intelligence) women named Weedy and Miss Debug.  The story in this game has Unhacker being put in charge of a job of trying to take out a devastating virus named the "5K Worm" that is set to destroy a lot of valuable data.  This is a tough task for sure and the task gets tougher when you hop into cyberspace as you'll see that this game isn't a simple case of repairing data as there will be obstacles hell bent on stopping you.  Can Unhacker, Weedy, and Miss Debug put an end to this killer worm?  For the power of unhacking is at your fingertips in Unhack.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: Devil Survivor 2 - The Animation (2013)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Friday, February 20, 2015 0 comments

"Devil Survivor 2 - The Animation" is an animated supernatural action series based on the video game of nearly the same name, "Shin Megami Tensai's: Devil Survivor 2 (2011)".  This show opens up with two friends named Hibiki Kuze and Daichi Shijima who are sitting down, having some nice warm drinks, and talking to each other about a creepy new web-site/phone-app (they say "Web-site" but it's totally a phone-app).  The site/app is called "Dead Face" (reminds me of "Deadmau5" every time) and all this site/app does is predicts the moment that you are going to die and it shows a video of the supposed moment in graphic and brutal detail.  Daichi Shijima takes a photo of Hibiki Kuze's face and sends it to Dead Face only to get back a clip of seeing them both die in a tragic train accident.  Hibiki Kuze and Daichi Shijima head out to a train station to catch a ride home (you can see where this is going already) and while waiting we see Daichi Shijima checking out a girl named Lo Nitta and goes on about how he wouldn't mind dating her.  Shortly after we see a train coming in and then suddenly comes off the tracks killing Hibiki Kuze and Daichi Shijima just as the video predicted.  We then see a weird moment of Hibiki Kuze getting a text-message asking if he wants to "live" or "die".  Hibiki Kuze chooses to live and awakens in the wreckage with Daichi Shijima and Lo Nitta only to see that the train station is full of demons feasting on the dead.  Sadly I am out of space for the main page preview but do not worry as the rest of the description of the show is right after the jump.  (Click "Read More" to read the review).

Steam Game Review: Ukrainian Ninja (2014)

"Ukrainian Ninja" is an action platformer for the PC and has you playing as a little ninja battling his way though the mean streets of Ukraine.  This game opens up with a cut-scene going on about a brief history of the ninja and then going on about how a bunch of ninja traveled the world to open up dojos.  Once the game starts you'll find yourself learning the basic ninja tricks and battling guys with guns with your sword.  Other than that there's no story but ninja carnage and violence instead.  Ukraine will never be the same again.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: Robot Chicken - DC Comics Special Two: Villains in Paradise (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Wednesday, February 18, 2015 0 comments

"Robot Chicken - DC Comics Special Two: Villains in Paradise" is the second Robot Chicken special to feature stop-motion animated skits solely based the DC Comics franchise.  In this special we go in a day in the life of what's it like working at the Legion of Doom (not to be confused with the wrestlers with the big spiky shoulder pads) ran by classic DC villains including: Lex Luthor, The Joker, The Penguin, Bizarro, Gorilla Grodd, and a few more others.  The DC heroes also appear in this special in all their super politically incorrect glory.  It's a super crazy action figure extravaganza that's fun for the whole family...  Assuming the whole family are fully grown adults that is.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

Steam Game Review: Dr. Green (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Tuesday, February 17, 2015 0 comments

"Dr. Green" is a retro game inspired 2D platformer for the PC.  This game starts up with a doctor witnessing the birth of his son but only for him to abandon his son in the forest shortly after due to not being able to handle raising a child.  The child ends up being just fine as he is rescued and raised by nature and grows up to be a healthy young man named "Dr. Green".  On one fine day we see that the forest is under attack by construction men that are hell bent on taking down the forest to put up some buildings owned by an evil corporation.  Dr. Green becomes hell bent on saving the forest from this evil force to protect his friends, family, and home.  How is Dr. Green going to battle this evil force?  With a gun of coarse.  Join Dr. Green as he runs, jumps, and shoots his way across forest and city alike to put an end to this evil and save his home.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: Frank (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Monday, February 16, 2015 0 comments

"Frank" is a black comedy about a keyboardist named Jon (played by Domhnall Gleeson) whom is busy trying to come up with an original song but he can't seem to find his core sound.  While Jon is on a walk he tries to come up with lyrics based on everything he sees that include women in pretty dresses and a band poster for a band named "Soronprfbs" (I don't know how to pronounce it either).  When he is at home all he does is play his keyboard and trying very hard to become relevant on Twitter.  On another one of his outings he spots the police trying to stop someone from drowning himself and walks up to see who the crazy person is.  Turns out the crazy person trying to drown himself is none other than the keyboardist for Soronprfbs and the whole band was also watching the guy try to drown himself.  Jon talks to the band's manager named Don (played by Scoot McNairy) and finds out that they will have to cancel their gig but Jon says that he plays keyboards and gets accepted as the band's temporal keyboardist.

Jon makes it to the gig while the band is playing only to see that the leader of the band is just some guy named Frank (played by Michael Fassbender) that wears a big fake head with an amplifier installed.  Frank never takes off his mask and even his friends have no idea what he looks like underneath.  Jon also gets lucky as he is invited to be their official keyboardist and then asked to join them for the recording of their album.  Jon accepts and goes with them only to find that they are recording the album in a little log cabin in the middle of nowhere and he has only one pair of clean clothes and no idea how long it will take to record.  How will Jon handle being a part of this band that's a cross-between "Talking Heads" and "Deadmau5" (might seem like a random combination but I'll explain why I used those two bands as an example in the review).  (Click "Read More to read the full review).

Steam Game Review: Nekopara Vol.1 (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Friday, February 6, 2015 0 comments

"Nekopara, Volume One" is a visual novel available for the PC.  This story has you taking the role of a guy named Kashou and he has just moved into his own apartment and getting ready to open up his own café named "Patisserie La Soleil".  While at the shop he gets some packages in the mail and he notices something odd about them as the boxes start making noises. Behold, in the boxes are Kashou's pets named "Chocola" and "Vanilla".  Chocola and Vanilla aren't your typical house pets as they are two very beautiful Catgirls (half cat, half human) and all they want to do is help out Kashou run his shop.  Kashou refuses at first but Chocola and Vanilla manage to change his mind after convincing him that they can help run his café without any problems.  Kashou trains them in the fine art of servicing customers and soon after they are ready to go do their job.  Will Kashou run a successful café?  How will life be for Kashou while living with two Catgirls that look like supermodels?  It's two (cat)girls, a guy, and a café in Nekopara Volume One.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

Steam Game Review: BasketBelle (2014)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Thursday, February 5, 2015 0 comments

"BasketBelle" is an 2D adventure game that utilizes many different elements from other video game genres.  This game has you playing as a little boy without a name although I nicknamed him "Son" as that's the first thing they called him in this game.  "Son" is the son of an nameless basketball legend (according to Son that is) although for the sake of this review we will call him "Father".  Son just loves playing basketball and wants to be a great player like his dad is.  Father introduces a surprise to Son and that is that Son is now a brother of a healthy little girl named "Belle" (the only officially named character in this game).  Son is having a good time trying to teach Belle the basics of basketball but during one session we see the ball bounce out of the yard and Son goes after the ball.  Once Son returns with the ball he see something that scares him and that was that Belle got kidnapped by a group of "Purple Tentacle Monsters".  Son is now on a mission to rescue his dear sister Belle by searching for her and beating the Purple Tentacle Monsters at a game of basketball.  It's little boy verses literal monsters of basketball in "BasketBelle".  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).

DVD Review: Majestic Prince, Part One (2013)

Posted by Retrokaiser On Wednesday, February 4, 2015 0 comments

"Majestic Prince, Part One" is the first volume of this animated science fiction series.  This series starts up with an alien invasion taking out Earth's space defenses in a horrible and brutal matter where the humans are losing, fast.  Meanwhile we see that the Earth defenses gain a new member to help win the humans the war.  We then cut to a group of five teenagers called "Team Rabbit".  The members that make up Team Rabbit are: Izuru Hitachi (The manga artist that tries way to hard to be a lone wolf hero), Toshikazu Asagi (The smart one that always suffers from having stomach pains from stress), Kei Kugimiya (The straight thinker of the group that takes everything seriously), Tamaki Irie (The big breasted one with an childish attitude that can't seem to get a boyfriend), and Ataru Suruga (The gun otaku that can't seem to get a girlfriend).  Team Rabbit go out on a training mission only to do a terrible job as they can not for the life of them work together as a team.  After their training we see that they are forced into the war even though they can't work as a team.  Team Rabbit somehow manage to get through the mission and are welcomed back to Earth as heroes and thus they go up a rank to where the big boys are fighting the war.  Will Team Rabbit iron out the kinks and work well as a team and save the human race?  I dunno about you but I think we're all doomed, DOOMED! Steam Game Review: Shovel Knight (2014)

"Shovel Knight" is an action packed platformer that takes inspiration from old video games, most notably "Megaman (1987)" and "Ducktales (1989)".  In this game you play a character named "Shovel Knight" (yes, like the title) whom had a great life with the love of his life named "Shield Knight".  Sadly Shovel Knight loses his love after an adventure that ended with Shield Knight meeting her doom when she came in contact with a cursed item. Devastated with the loss of Shield Knight we see Shovel Knight taking a new life by living in a peaceful village.  Sadly Shovel Knight has to come out of retirement due to the entire land being taken over by seven knights with crazy abilities who are lead by the evil Enchantress.  Will Shovel Knight put an end to their take over and will he find peace in his life?  (Click "Read More" to read full review).

Steam Game Review: QP Shooting - Dangerous!! (2014)

"QP Shooting - Dangerous!!" is a vertical 2D schmup game for the PC.  This game has you playing as "QP", a cute little cat-girl dressed up in a cute little sailor uniform.  QP is a girl on a mission as something bad happened to her that hurt her feelings, this thing was so bad, so heinous, so vile, so nasty, and so not very nice at all and this thing will shock you...  Somebody took QP's pudding snacks (GASP).  Now QP is out for blood... And pudding and now has to fly around and defeat waves upon waves of enemies and ask friends and foes alike just to find her sweet, sweet, snacks.  She may look sweet but believe me, you don't want to be in her path of destruction.  (Click "Read More" to read the full review).
